Sand casting

With sand casting techniques, the casting models can be made of wood, plastic or any other material that retains its shape. In some cases, models are used for this that have been manufactured by means of Rapid Prototyping techniques. 
The model of the product to be poured is placed on a mold plate. A molding box is placed around the model on the mold plate. Then the molding box is filled with sand. In order to get the sand firmly in the shape, the molding box is vibrated while pressing the sand. Then the top is smoothed. The molding box is now turned over and the mold is removed. The same process is also carried out for the second molding box (in which the rest of the mold of the product is applied). In this upper part, openings are made where the liquid material can be poured into the mold (pouring tap) and where the air can escape (riser). After the filled mold has cooled, the molded product can be taken out. Extra material is available at the location of the pouring spigot and the riser. This excess material must now be removed (usually by sawing). This is the simplest sand mold casting process.
However, most products are not that simple. That is why we will often work with a core. This core ensures that the cast material is kept away from certain places.

The sand used for the casting process is not ordinary sand. The cohesion of the sand must be better than that of ordinary sand, so that the mold cavity remains intact when handling the molding box. that is why a clay-bound molding sand is often used. In addition, it is also possible to mix some synthetic resin through the sand and in this way create a good cohesion of the sand. This method is also often used in forming the cores.


In sand casting techniques we use molds to apply the casting mold. In order to be able to remove these molds from the formed sand mold, the molds must be releasable. Sand casting always requires post-processing on the product. A spout and one or more risers must always be sawn off. In addition, a cast seam can be seen (depending on the proper connection of the mold boxes to each other). If the sandboxes have an insufficiently smooth finish or are insufficiently filled, a burr will form here. If this happens, this burr must be removed. This can be done by sanding or grinding. However, if the burr becomes too large, it may be necessary to mill it away.

If cast models have to comply with precise tolerances at specific locations, the desired dimensions can often only be achieved by means of a machining operation. After sand mold casting, one or more machining operations will therefore always have to be performed. Sand casting is a production technique that can be very interesting for both single pieces and medium-sized series. Complicated products with fine details can be realized.
